cards will no longer be accepted as proof of birth or date of birth in Uttar Pradesh, according to a new order issued by the state government. The Planning Department of the Uttar Pradesh government announced that Aadhaar cards will no longer be accepted as a birth certificate or proof of date of birth. The instruction has been issued to all the departments of the state, it said. "No birth certificate is attached to the Aadhaar card; therefore, it cannot be considered a birth certificate," said Amit Singh Bansal, Special Secretary of the Planning Department.

Earlier on Thursday, Maharashtra had reportedly ordered the cancellation of Aadhaar-based birth and death certificates. Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Thursday directed the state administration to immediately cancel fake birth and death certificates issued solely on the basis of Aadhaar card evidence or certificates considered suspicious, and to file police complaints without delay.“Instructions have been given to withdraw and cancel orders of birth and death registrations distributed by Naib Tehsildars after the August 11, 2023 amendment. Orders granting birth-death certificates solely based on Aadhaar card evidence will be considered faulty," the release said. "The revenue department clarified, citing central government guidelines, that Aadhaar card cannot be accepted as proof of birth or place of birth. Notably, under the supervision of district collectors and divisional commissioners, special campaigns and meetings will be held to resolve these issues,” it added.Earlier this week, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had deactivated more than two crore Aadhaar numbers belonging to dead individuals. This is said to be one of the largest clean-up exercises of the national identity database. According to a Ministry of Electronics & IT press release, this step aims to keep Aadhaar records accurate and prevent identity misuse.UIDAI has sourced deceased persons’ data from the Registrar General of India (RGI), states and union territories, public distribution system, national social assistance program, among others."The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated more than 2 crore Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals as part of a nationwide clean-up effort to maintain the continued accuracy of the Aadhaar database," the statement said. Aadhaar custodian said that it is also looking to collaborate with financial institutions and other such entities for getting deceased persons data.
