boat carrying villagers across the Yamuna river capsized in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district, leaving two persons, including a child, dead and four others missing, police said on Thursday(May 7). The incident took place on Wednesday evening in Kutubpur Patiya hamlet under Bhauli gram panchayat in the Kurara police station area when nine passengers, apart from the boatman, were returning from a river island. According to police, the boat lost balance in the middle of the river and overturned around 7 pm, triggering panic among those on board. Rescue operations continued through Thursday amid heavy rain and rising water levels, with teams struggling to trace the missing persons.
Rescue Teams Battle Rain As Search Continues
The boatman, identified as Dheeru, managed to rescue three passengers, Vishnu, Rinku, and Parul. However, six others, including five children and a woman, went missing in the river. Police identified them as Akanksha (9), Rani (9), Brijrani (25), Labhyansh (5), Mahesh (6), and Aditya (11).Later on Thursday, rescue teams recovered the bodies of Akanksha and Brijrani.SHO Brijesh Kumar said that due to heavy rain since morning, teams were facing difficulties in carrying out rescue operations.District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal said teams of the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force were conducting searches to trace the missing persons.
CM Adityanath Orders Probe Into Incident
Taking cognisance of the tragedy, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the district administration to investigate the cause of the accident and ensure effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.He also ordered senior police and administrative officials to immediately reach the spot and carry out relief and rescue work on a war footing.BJP MLA Manoj Prajapati said, “We will ensure compensation to the affected families in accordance with the rules and submit a report to the chief minister on the incident.”
