Bargarh: A heartbreaking incident from Odisha’s Bargarh district has left many people emotional and raised serious questions about family values and social responsibility.Eighty-year-old Jayanti Bacha, a resident of Kantapada village under Paikmal block, passed away due to natural causes. As per tradition, family members informed her younger son about her death and waited for him to arrive for the final rites. Hours passed, but he never came.According to family members, the son, who works in Cuttack and had married outside his caste, had been staying away from the family for years. Despite being informed about his mother’s death, he did not return to pay his last respects.The family also struggled to find help for transporting the body. Relatives
were absent, and even an ambulance failed to arrive. With no other option left, Jayanti’s daughter, grandchildren, and a few compassionate neighbors stepped forward to perform the final rites.In a scene that has moved people across the state, the elderly woman’s body was tied to a bicycle and taken for her final journey. The family later performed her last rites on nearby land with the limited resources available to them.The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many questioning whether relationships today survive only during happy times and disappear when responsibilities arise.The tragedy comes just days after another shocking incident in Odisha, where a man carried the skeletal remains of his deceased sister on a bicycle to a bank over a financial dispute.These incidents highlight not only the hardships faced by vulnerable families but also the importance of compassion, dignity, and support during life’s most difficult moments.
