Railways fare hike: Train travel across India hasbecome slightly costlier from today, with Indian Railways implementing a revised fare structure, the second such hike in less than six months. The Ministry of Railways has clarified that the revised fares will apply only to tickets issued on or after December 26, 2025. Passengers who booked tickets before this date will not have to pay any additional amount, even if their journey is scheduled later.

Under the revised fares, non-AC passengers travelling up to 500 km will pay an additional Rs 10. Fares for Mail and Express trains in non-AC classes have been increased by 2 paise per km, while AC class fares have also gone up by 2 paise per km. For Ordinary Class travel beyond 215 km, fares have been raised by 1 paise per km.

No fare increase for Suburban services, Season tickets and Second-Classss Ordinary journeys up to 215 km

There is, however, no increase in fares for suburban services, Monthly Season Tickets, or Second-Classlass Ordinary journeys up to 215 km. Railways have also clarified that reservation charges, superfast surcharges, and other ancillary fees remain unchanged and will continue to be levied separately. GST, wherever applicable, will also continue as per existing rules, and fare rounding norms remain the same.According to the Railways, the fare rationalisation is expected to generate around Rs 600 crore in additional revenue this financial year. The revised fares apply uniformly across major train services, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Humsafar, Garib Rath, Jan Shatabdi, and other Mail/Express and Ordinary non-suburban services.Tickets already issued at pre-revised rates will not reflect any fare difference in reservation charts. However, tickets issued by TTEs or ticket-checking staff on or after December 26 will be charged at the revised rates. Updated fare lists will also be displayed at railway stations, and changes will be reflected across ticketing systems, including PRS and UTS.
