Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday visited the Taj Mahal with his wife Jeanette Rubio and described the famed Mughal era monument as "one of the love treasures of the world".Rubio, who is on a four-day visit to India, arrived at the Kheria airport in Agra in a special aircraft and travelled by car to a hotel near the eastern gate of the Taj Mahal before proceeding to the monument in a golf cart. "Thank You For Allowing Us To Visit One Of The Love Treasures Of The World," Rubio wrote in the visitors' book. The US Secretary of State spent around an hour at the 17th-century marble mausoleum.
Notably, US Secretary of State's visit to Agra comes at a time when global attention remains fixed on Iran war. However, the image of Marco Rubio visiting the Taj Mahal — often called the monument of love — carries symbolic weight. Against the backdrop of war and uncertainty, the Taj Mahal’s enduring message of love, highly differs from the ongoing reality that is shaping today’s world order.
Iran Embassy Reacts On Rubio's Taj Mahal Visit
Elaborating on the symbolism surrounding Rubio’s visit to the Taj Mahal, the Iran Embassy in Hyderabad appeared to take a swipe at the US Secretary of State, stating that had Rubio been aware of the monument’s history and architectural legacy, he may not have posed for a photograph there. The Embassy highlighted that the Taj Mahal was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his Iranian-origin wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and noted the influence and craftsmanship of Iranian architects in shaping one of the world’s most celebrated monuments."If Rubio knew the history or architecture, he wouldn't have posed for a picture here. This monument was built out for the love of emperor's Iranian wife, crafted by the genius of Iranian architects — meanwhile his government today threatens to wipe out Iranian civilization, insulting other civilizations," the Iran Embassy wrote in a post on X.
Ambassador Sergio Gor Accompanies Rubio
Rubio was also accompanied by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. The ambassador also joined the Rubios for a photograph at the UNESCO World Heritage site."Wonderful to be back at the iconic Taj Mahal with Secretary Marco Rubio, Jeanette Rubio and Robert Gabriel. A breathtaking symbol of India’s extraordinary heritage and craftsmanship," Gor wrote in a post on X.Security was tightened around the Taj Mahal during the high-profile visit, while tourists already present inside the monument complex were temporarily asked to move out by security personnel.Rubio is set to travel to Jaipur before returning to New Delhi on Tuesday morning to attend a meeting of Quad foreign ministers.
