Srinagar: An avalanche struck the Sonamarg tourist resort in Jammu and Kashmir late Tuesday night (January 27), but officials confirmed that no lives were lost. The incident occurred at 10:12 pm in Ganderbal
district, in central Kashmir. A massive avalanche in Sonamarg was captured on CCTV, showing snow sweeping over buildings. Authorities had issued a high-danger avalanche warning for the district on Monday. Over the past 24 hours, Sonamarg and much of the Kashmir Valley experienced moderate to heavy snowfall.
Avalanche Strikes Sonamarg Amid Heavy Snow
Srinagar airport saw all 58 scheduled flights, including 29 arrivals and 29 departures, canceled on Tuesday due to unsafe runway conditions, leaving hundreds of tourists stranded. While the valley, including Srinagar, recorded light to moderate snow, higher-altitude areas received heavy snowfall, transforming popular tourist resorts like Sonamarg, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam into picturesque winter wonderlands.President Beopar Mandal Sonamarg, Furqan Shera, informed that the avalanche struck the truck yard area of Sonamarg. He said that no damage has been reported so far. According to him, CCTV footage has captured the strong winds generated by the avalanche, which also affected nearby Sonamarg village. The situation is being closely monitored, and further details are awaited.
