New Delhi: India and Bangladesh have agreed to increase awareness among people living along the international border, with both countries emphasising that local residents can play a crucial role in preventing illegal activities and strengthening border security. The issue figured prominently during the 57th Director General-level Border Coordination Conference between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), held in New Delhi from June 8 to 11.The Indian delegation was led by BSF Director General Praveen Kumar, while the Bangladesh side was headed by BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui. Also Read - ‘Detect, Delete, Deport’: What is Suvendu Adhikari's 3-Step Action on Illegal Immigrants in Bengal
According to a BSF statement, both sides held detailed discussions on measures to effectively curb trans-border crimes and improve cooperation in managing the nearly 4,100-km-long India-Bangladesh border."Both sides held detailed discussions on measures to effectively prevent trans-border crimes, including smuggling of narcotics, arms, counterfeit currency, gold and other contraband, as well as illegal border crossings and human trafficking," the BSF said.Apart from cross-border crime, the two delegations discussed border deaths, illegal, inadvertent and forcible crossings, construction of border infrastructure, implementation of the Coordinated Border Management Plan, and emerging security challenges."The two delegations also discussed issues relating to border deaths and illegal/inadvertent/forcible crossing at the border areas, construction of border infrastructure, implementation of the Coordinated Border Management Plan, confidence building measures and the need for closer cooperation in addressing emerging security challenges along the border," the statement said.A key outcome of the talks was the decision to involve border communities more actively in maintaining security. Officials from both countries stressed the need to educate local populations about the importance of respecting the international boundary and avoiding activities that could aid criminal networks."Emphasis was also laid on sensitizing border population about the sanctity of the international boundary and promoting greater public awareness to prevent illegal activities in border areas," the BSF said.Security officials believe villagers living near the border are often the first to notice suspicious movement, smuggling attempts, illegal crossings or trafficking activities. Greater public awareness and cooperation can therefore act as an early warning mechanism for border forces on both sides. The conference, held in a "cordial, positive and forward-looking atmosphere," reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to maintaining peace and stability along the border."Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, tranquility and stability along the India-Bangladesh border. They agreed to further strengthen coordinated patrols, enhance vigil, improve real-time information sharing and intensify joint efforts against trans-border criminal networks," the BSF statement said. The two forces also reiterated a policy of zero tolerance towards cross-border crimes and insurgent activities."The two border guarding forces reiterated their shared resolve to adopt a policy of zero tolerance towards trans-border crimes, insurgent activities and any actions that undermine border security," the statement added. The conference concluded with the signing of a Joint Record of Discussions on June 11, with both sides expressing confidence that the agreements reached would further strengthen border management and bilateral relations. The next DG-level conference is proposed to be held in Dhaka in November 2026.
