Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw underscored India’s reliability at Davos, stating that it is a “trusted partner to the world," while responding to a question on the ongoing trade negotiations with the United States. "We are a trusted partner to the world," said Vaishnaw when asked about the proposed India-US trade deal during a press conference at Davos on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting. India and the US have been negotiating the terms of a proposed bilateral trade agreement since last year. However, the negotiations hit a major roadblock when Trump imposed 50 per cent tariff on India, among the highest in the world. Months later, the US has once again signalled an intent to rebuild its relationship India, with Trump's
new ambassador to Delhi Sergio Gor saying that no country is as essential as India to the United States.
Last week, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said that India and the United States are "very near" to signing the first tranche of the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). Though the Commerce Secretary said that India-US are very near to closing the first tranche of the trade deal, he stopped short of putting any timeline on it.Vaishnaw said that there is a lot of curiosity in the world about the democratisation of technology and asserted that it is the right way to go ahead to ensure the benefits of AI and all other tech innovations for everyone. Addressing a press conference, he also said the Central government will welcome more states to join WEF delegations as it pushes Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cooperative federalism mantra. This year, 10 states are present at Davos. The minister said the more the number of states, the better. "From the Central government, we definitely welcome all the states who would like to participate and we help them be part of this entire thing. We also help them set up the right kind of meetings they would like to do here with business leaders and other leaders," he said. At the same briefing, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said India's presence at Davos is getting registered in a major way and “we all are here following the cooperative federalism mantra given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi”. “We get to know best practices here and some MoUs also get signed,” he said.
