When police officer Autumn Fettig saw that Walmart and Best Friends Animal Society were hosting an adoption event, she was intrigued. She decided to stop by during her shift just to say hi and make sure everything was running smoothly. Adopting a dog definitely wasn’t on the agenda for the day.
Then she met Cookie Dough.
The 8-month-old pup came to the event with Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society looking for a home, and the minute Fettig met him, her heart exploded.
“I was drawn to Cookie Dough's pink nose, little spots everywhere and jowl-to-dog ratio (he's very squishy!),” Fettig told The Dodo. “At the Best Friends and Walmart adoption event, he was cute and cuddly in a blanket, hiding his face at one point, which melted my heart.”
Fettig and her
family had been wanting to adopt another dog eventually, but weren’t planning on making it happen so soon. When Fettig thought about leaving Cookie Dough behind, though, she knew she simply didn’t have a choice.
“I couldn't let Cookie Dough go back to the shelter without a family,” Fettig said.
At the end of her shift, Fettig “took him into custody” and loaded him into her police car — and drove him straight home.
Cookie Dough has settled in beautifully to his new home and loves everything about his life with Fettig and her family.
“His new nickname is Rump Roast, as he takes up most of the bed with his (dog) brother Nash,” Fettig said. “He loves playing, cuddling, hoarding all of the toys, and being on top of people at all times.”
When Fettig was first patrolling the adoption event, she had no idea she would end up meeting her furry soulmate, but now she wouldn’t have it any other way.
