Recently, rescuers at Lancaster Farm Sanctuary in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, answered a call from a very worried police officer. The officer told them there was a huge animal collapsed on the side of a major highway, and they had no idea what to do.
“They were like, ‘Oh my God, we really, really need your help,” Sarah, a sanctuary staff member, said in a video for The Dodo.
Rescuers suspect the animal — a large-breed pig — had likely escaped a trailer while stopped in traffic.
“There’s a lot of live animal auctions in our area,” Jonina, another team member, said. “It’s very possible it was a day that was, like, ‘slaughter pig sale,’ and she had just been purchased and was on her way to a grim fate and just had this lucky chance.”
Team members used corral panels to secure the pig and move her into their trailer. They brought her back to the sanctuary, and they named her Robin.
Safe at the farm, Robin transformed from a nervous, shut-down pig into an outgoing girl known for constant zoomies.
“Robin seemed to love zooming right away,” Jonina said.
The sweet pig enjoyed every amenity at the sanctuary, and rescuers loved seeing her shine.
“She has her own little house, which is very cute,” Sarah said. “She loves, loves, loves going in the mud wallows.”
Today, Robin remains at the sanctuary, her forever home, a place where she finally feels happy and free.
Just recently, Robin was introduced to the main pig herd on the farm. She quickly connected with a pig named Jean Marie, and rescuers are hopeful their friendship will stand the test of time.
"We have no idea what Robin and Jean’s relationship will become, but we couldn’t help wondering if we were witnessing the very first moments of a new friendship," Lancaster Farm Sanctuary wrote in a Facebook post. "This is what sanctuary makes possible. The chance to heal, build relationships, make your own choices. To discover who you are when your life is finally your own."
