The other day, workers at a maintenance yard on Long Island, New York, stopped in their tracks when they heard small “screams” echoing from inside an industrial shredder.
Confused staffers peeked inside the machine and noticed three tiny balls of fur —
a litter of days-old kittens.
The workers couldn’t believe their eyes. If they’d waited much longer or hadn’t noticed the sounds, the little kittens would have been “completely obliterated” inside the dangerous tool.
Needing expert help, the workers called local animal rescuer John Debacker, who headed straight over.
Debacker held his breath as he reached inside the shredder.
“I was nervous that I'd be pulling out dead kittens,” Debacker told The Dodo. “But was relieved seeing them all alive.”
The rescuer secured all three kittens and brought them to a foster home in Suffolk County. He searched the maintenance yard for their mother, but had no luck catching her. Fortunately, the kittens don’t have to worry — their foster mom is happy to bottle-feed them until they’re old enough to start looking for homes of their own.
Thanks to Debacker’s hard work, the bottle-feeder’s care and the maintenance workers’ keen ears, these kittens are out of the shredder and into a life of love.
