What began as a lifesaving encounter in the snowy woods has now come full circle.
Early last April, Brandon (@rightbrainedmom) was walking her dog on a trail near her home in Canada when the pup suddenly started barking. It was then that Brandon first
noticed an odd black mound on the ground atop a pile of dead leaves.
Moving in for a closer look, Brandon realized it was a raven — injured and unable to fly.
Using her jacket, Brandon scooped the bird into her arms to get him the help he needed.
“He didn’t fuss at all, and he sort of melted in my arms,” Brandon told The Dodo in an earlier article. “Have you ever swaddled a raven and snuggled him close to your chest while he gazed up at you all sweet and lovingly? I hadn’t before that day. And oh my goodness, what an incredible experience.”
Brandon reached out to volunteers from Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary, who suggested she bring the raven in for treatment.
The raven was found to have injuries on his head, wing and leg. But under expert care, his condition began to improve.
“I’m glad I got to meet him and be a tiny part of his healing,” Brandon said.
But that wouldn’t be the last time their paths would cross.
Weeks turned to months, and the snow that once covered the ground near Brandon's home melted away. The memory of the raven she’d rescued, however, never left her mind.
Then, last week, Brandon received a text.
The raven was now fully healed and ready to be picked up and released nearby to where Brandon had found him:
Brandon had found the raven on the verge of death — and now she watched him fly free. Her decision to stop and help that snowy day, together with months of expert care from Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary, made all the difference.
“I loved seeing him fly off like that,” Brandon wrote. “But I do hope he comes back for a little visit.”
