Last week, a New York resident went to grab their Amazon package when they noticed a gray tabby cat quietly curled up on the box. At first, the cat just seemed to be resting, but they soon realized he was older than they had originally assumed. His sleepiness
appeared to suggest something more urgent was going on.
So, they called the folks at PuppyKittyNYCity (PKNYC)
, who arrived as quickly as possible to help. When they arrived, they could tell right away that the stray cat was elderly and sick. The rescuers wasted no time saving him, carefully snagging him from the box and placing him in a carrier.
They were devastated to see just how shut-down the cat was, and they wondered what his life was like leading up to that moment.
“[He] showed up on a stranger’s porch in terrible condition, with nothing but some Amazon packages to curl up on,” PKNYC wrote on Instagram. “We have no idea how long he had been struggling before he finally found help.”
The team rushed him to PKNYC’s headquarters, where a thorough checkup confirmed that the sweet boy, whom they named Maribel, was sicker than he seemed.
“Maribel is slowly improving, but we discovered he has heart disease and asthma in addition to recovering from being sick,” PKNYC wrote.
You can see Maribel recovering in his kennel here:
Poor Maribel was struggling physically, requiring immediate hospitalization. And although the team started his treatment plan right away, being in the chaotic shelter environment began affecting him emotionally, too.
“[T]he shelter is not where we want him to spend his days,” PKNYC wrote on Instagram. “He deserves a soft bed, a quiet home and someone to remind him that his best days can still be ahead of him.”
With Maribel’s treatment underway, the PKNYC team is now desperate to find him a foster home as soon as possible. His condition is slowly improving each day, and they know a cozy home environment will help speed up his recovery.
Maribel has come a long way in just one week, but he’s still waiting for his happily-ever-after. And his friends at PKNYC are searching high and low to make his dreams come true.
“First, he waited on Amazon packages for someone to save him,” PKNYC wrote. “Now he waits in a cage for someone to take him home.”
