When Cosmo arrived at Tri-County Humane Society as a stray at the end of August, it was clear he’d already had a hard life. He was scared and a little shut down — and his smushed ears made him look just a bit different.
After living on the streets, it
seemed that Cosmo had gone too long with untreated ear infections and frostbite, giving his ears a very distinct look.
“While we don't know his backstory, he appears to have lived a rough and tumble life,” Kate Kompas of Tri-County Humane Society told The Dodo.
The shelter staff gave Cosmo the time and space he needed to settle in after everything he’d been through. Luckily, he was in good health overall and didn’t seem to notice that his ears made him stand out.
“I don't know if he knows he's different, but he's a cat, so he likely thinks he's special anyway,” Kompas said.
He may look different to everyone else, but his unique appearance is the mark of a survivor. It’s possible he’s never known a loving home before, and his new friends are hoping that someone can step up to give him that very soon.
Cosmo would do best in a low-key home with a family who is willing to respect his space and let him warm up in his own time.
“He's definitely an independent cat who appreciates having boundaries, but he has a sweet, loving side,” Kompas said. “The way to his heart is definitely food, our volunteers report — if you want pets, he wants food in exchange.”
Cosmo may look a little different, but he wants the same thing that all pets want: a loving home to call his own.
