I rescued my two kittens, Potato and Casserole, when they were only 6 weeks old. I was supposed to be their foster mom, but after only a week of having them, I knew there was no way I could ever let them go. A year and a half later, the kittens are thriving
— and more energetic than ever.
Having two young cats, it can be challenging to find toys to keep them occupied, entertained and help them get their energy out all at once. When I got the opportunity to try out some Whisker City toys, a brand exclusive to PetSmart, with them, I jumped at the chance. Toys to potentially keep them from getting bored and destroying my apartment? I’m in.
The first thing we tried was the Whisker City Spring Swatter Chirping Cat Toy. When I first unboxed it and set it up, the kittens were a little unsure. They don’t have any other toys like it, so they approached it with extreme caution while trying to figure out what it was. Casserole was the brave one who smacked it first, and they were both fascinated and delighted when it started making noise and bouncing all around.
After that, Potato sat next to it on and off all day, smacking it and watching it bounce around. It’s a very mesmerizing toy, and I can see why they enjoy it. I’ll be in a different room and periodically hear it chirping after one of them has given it a good smack.
I’d definitely recommend this toy for cats who are curious and active. It’s not a passive toy — it forces the kitties to get in there and get involved.
Next, we moved on to the Whisker City Ball Track & Scratcher. Potato and Casserole have a similar toy that involves pushing balls along a track, but having a scratcher in the middle makes it unique, and I was curious to see how they’d react to it.
Immediately, they both loved the ball aspect of the toy and started hitting it around the track. The toy also comes with catnip, and I sprinkled it on top of and underneath the scratcher in the middle. This drew them both to inspect it and added another layer of intrigue.
Now, both cats use the toy in a variety of ways. Sometimes I’ll find them lying on the ground and smacking the ball lazily, and other times they'll be sat in the middle on the scratcher, using both parts of the toy at the same time. Overall the toy is a great addition to our repertoire, and I’d absolutely recommend it.
Finally, we tried out the Whisker City Chirping Mouse Teaser Attachment paired with the Whisker City Comfort Handle Teaser Wand. We used to have a wand toy that the kittens loved, but it was a hand-me-down and broke not too long ago. I was excited to get a replacement as the kittens have always loved wand toys.
This one is a little different than our last, mostly because it has several different toys attached to one string, and it makes noise. I attached it to the handle, which is sold separately, and was actually impressed with how comfortable it was to hold. If you’re playing with kittens for hours on end, this is a big selling point. I began swinging it around, and Potato and Casserole came running. Casserole was a little shocked by how much the toy had going on, but Potato was immediately into it, and Casserole warmed up pretty quickly.
Both cats will abandon whatever mischief they’re engaging in as soon as I pick up this wand toy. They love jumping for it, chasing it, and will even pick it up and carry it around if I stop cooperating and leave it on the floor. It’s an excellent wand toy and keeps the cats entertained in a big way.
