When Haze arrived at San Diego Humane Society last year, she was heartbroken. Her mom, Ana, had fallen into a coma after a car accident. A family member brought Haze to the shelter as there was no one who could properly care for her.
As Haze settled in,
everyone at the shelter quickly fell in love with her. She was so smart and sweet, and her carers were convinced she’d be adopted quickly — but for some reason, she wasn’t.
“I actually brought Haze on multiple media segments to promote this wonderful dog, and was so surprised she did not get adopted,” Nina Thompson, senior director of public relations for San Diego Humane Society, told The Dodo. “She’s a young, smart, beautiful dog. There was a bigger reason all along.”
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the shelter or Haze, something incredible happened — Ana made a full recovery.
It had been a year since Haze had been brought to the shelter, and Ana assumed she’d been adopted a long time ago. She was browsing the San Diego Humane Society website, looking for a new furry friend, and was shocked when she saw Haze’s sweet face smiling back at her. She contacted them immediately, and no one could believe it.
Before long, Ana arrived at the shelter to bring Haze home. A staff member brought her out, and it only took a few minutes before Haze was all over Ana, so thrilled to see her mom again.
“Haze started leaning in, giving kisses, then slowly starting to jump up on Ana to give her a hug,” Thompson said. “It was like she was trying to crawl into her lap. It was very emotional. After another few moments, Haze’s tail started wagging and her body language became relaxed. She knew.”
No one ever understood why Haze hadn’t been adopted. It turns out a reunion was always meant to happen.
