Earlier this month, the Asbury Park Police Department received an anonymous tip about a group of abandoned pets struggling to survive in a suburban yard.
Officers rushed to the scene with members of Monmouth County SPCA’s animal control team. When they
arrived, they found a mesh play tunnel draped over a concrete wall. Inside, four cats cowered in fear, their fluffy coats soaked through after hours of waiting in the rain.
Officers couldn’t believe their eyes.
“Seeing something like this is always devastating for us,” Monmouth County SPCA media and marketing manager Lindsay Sanator told The Dodo. “It’s impossible to understand how anyone could abandon an animal like that.”
The rescuers gently grabbed each cat, placed them inside their vehicle and brought them to the SPCA for further care.
“[They were] soaking wet, freezing, covered in fleas and beyond confused about what was happening to them,” the SPCA wrote in a Facebook post.
Expert staff gave the cats a full examination. Today, the cats are up to date on initial vaccines, receiving flea and tick treatment and enjoying regular meals. Once their stray hold ends, they’ll be available for adoption and start looking for permanent families.
Rescuers say the cats are “desperate” for love and affection. They look forward to the day when they're all safe in their forever homes.
“These cats are very friendly,” the SPCA wrote. “We have no doubt that when they're ready for adoption, they'll find good homes in no time.”
