Alone in a ditch in Houston, Texas, a little dog named Mica cowered on a pink blanket. The dirty scrap of cloth was Mica’s only source of comfort, a thin boundary protecting her from the mud and sharp
twigs surrounding her on all sides.
When Diana, a local animal rescuer who runs @spookykittykats, noticed Mica trembling in the wild, she knew she had to do something.
“I had to really act quick because I didn’t want her to get scared and bolt,” Diana said in a video for The Dodo.
Diana carefully secured Mica with a leash and took the pup back to her car.
“When I got her in the car, she just nuzzled right in,” Diana said. “She was shaking.”
Diana called her friend Samantha, who rescues and fosters dogs through Street Life to the Sweet Life, and told her who she’d found. Samantha happily agreed to take Mica into foster care.
Safe with Samantha, Mica enjoyed a bath, then settled into a quiet space to decompress.
“Mica was kind of shy at first,” Samantha said in the video. “But you could tell that she just wanted to be loved on.”
Mica’s trepidation quickly melted away, and she began trusting her rescuers.
“She didn’t take very long to warm up,” Samantha said.
The timid pup who once cowered in the woods was now excitedly wagging her tail and rushing toward her new friends, showing off her signature dance moves.
“She was super excited to see you, but she was never gonna jump on you,” Samantha said. “She would just dance really fast in front of you. Her whole body wiggles.”
After three weeks in Samantha’s care, Mica connected with her forever family and moved to Minnesota to be with them.
Today, Mica, now named Ewa, enjoys long games of fetch in her big backyard, relishing every moment.
“She’s at a really great home,” Samantha said. “She loves her people.”
