A boy named Levi was walking home from school in May when he came across a puppy lying all alone on the side of the road. Without hesitation, Levi scooped the puppy up and brought him home. He and his family took the puppy to the vet, where they were
given shocking news.
The puppy was actually not a puppy at all. Instead, Levi had actually rescued a baby coyote.
The family was surprised, but they were still grateful they were able to rescue the wild pup, who was suffering from a broken leg and desperately needed help. He was transferred into the care of Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) and named Kojo.
Kojo quickly began getting the care he needed. His leg eventually healed and he settled into life at the rescue, growing bigger and stronger every day.
“He is being raised with two other wild coyotes, and they will all be released [in] another month or so,” Kelley LaBonty from DAWG told The Dodo.
Kojo is thriving with his new pack, and his carers can’t wait to see them all rejoin the wild together. None of it would have been possible without Levi — who is still finding ways to help Kojo even now.
“The family was so thankful that they designated DAWG as the honoree for their son Levi’s bar mitzvah gifts,” LaBonty said.
Levi, his family and everyone at DAWG have loved watching baby Kojo grow into a full-fledged coyote, and they all played a part in making sure he can live a long, happy life.
“We were all blessed by baby Kojo and thankful he received care and can return to the wild,” LaBonty said.
