The Hartman Prehistoric Garden, a themed area inside the Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin, Texas, features an incredible collection of ancient plants that recreate a Cretaceous habitat for visitors to explore.
Recently, team members at the garden noticed
someone surprising among the leaves, though he wasn’t a dinosaur. He was a “lethargic” armadillo who clearly needed help.
Garden staff grabbed the armadillo, affectionately named Hartman, and raced him to Austin Wildlife Rescue for further care.
Rescuers were extremely concerned for Hartman, who suffered from trauma, puncture wounds and bruising. The animal experts held their breath as they began treatment, hoping for the best.
“Hartman was especially challenging, because his condition wasn't responding as we'd hoped,” Jules Maron, executive director of Austin Wildlife Rescue, told The Dodo.
Thankfully, within 24 hours, rescuers began seeing progress.
“It was an enormous relief,” Maron said. “What made Hartman special was that he never seemed to lose his fighting spirit. He certainly wasn't making our jobs easy, but we were more than happy to put up with his attitude if it meant he was getting stronger!"
With his energy renewed, Hartman began revealing his true colors.
“Hartman had opinions, very strong opinions,” Maron said. “And he was not shy about expressing them!”
It soon became clear that Hartman wasn’t interested in spending time with his rescuers, a positive sign, as it meant he was maintaining his wild instincts.
Months after his rescue, Hartman was back to full health and ready to return to the wild. Rescuers smiled as they watched their unique friend scamper away.
“Instead of making a graceful departure into the vegetation, he began bouncing around among the staff members who had gathered to watch him,” Maron said. “It was such a comical scene, particularly after everything we'd been through.”
For Maron, Hartman’s autonomy meant everything.
“These moments are so perfect for us — the moments where we see an animal completely dependent on us turn into an animal that needs absolutely nothing from us,” she said.
