A few weeks ago, this dog named Tank arrived at the Humane Society of Greater Miami — but in a way that no pup should.
Staff at the shelter were surprised to discover Tank alone in their lobby on a day when it was supposed to be closed. With a sturdy leash
still clipped to his collar, but with no owner in sight, the poor dog was terrified to find himself in an unfamiliar place.
“Tank was incredibly anxious," the Humane Society of Greater Miami told The Dodo. "He was shaking, frightened, and even urinated out of fear.”
Then staff checked their security footage, learning just how Tank came to be there.
Here’s a video of that moment — and more showing just how far Tank has come since then:
"Somehow, our front door magnet malfunctioned, allowing him to be left inside," the shelter wrote. "Thankfully, he didn’t slip back through the door or run away, but he did watch as the person he trusted walked away and drove off."
But despite that trauma, his future has never looked brighter, being now in the hands of people who have his best interests at heart.
“It's been so rewarding to watch Tank slowly come out of his shell," the shelter said. "He's still gaining confidence every day, but the difference is incredible. Walks have become much easier, and he's much more comfortable interacting with our staff now that he knows we're here to care for him. Seeing him begin to trust people again has been one of the most rewarding parts of his journey.”
Little is known about Tank’s life before he was left there, though his rescuers are eager to see him start on a far happier next chapter — by finding him a new home to call his own.
“It’s heartbreaking how Tank’s story began, but we’re determined to make sure that’s not how it ends,” the shelter wrote. “His past may have been filled with fear and abandonment, but we’re hoping his future is filled with love, security, and the forever family he has always deserved.”
