Earlier this month, a woman named Lollie was asleep in bed with her partner when the pair suddenly woke to the sound of “screams” outside their home.
The couple, who live on the south coast of England, raced to the window, already suspicious of who it
might be.
“We knew it was a fox because we have heard them in the street before,” Lollie told East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (East Sussex WRAS), a local rescue group and registered charity. “We looked out of our bedroom window and shone a torch into our small courtyard garden. That was when we saw a young fox desperately trying to get out.”
It seemed the little fox had accidentally tumbled over the wall into the enclosed outdoor space, and now he couldn’t get back home.
Fearing the fox might hurt himself and unsure what to do, the couple called East Sussex WRAS for help. Soon, WRAS rescuers Kristy and Trevor were on their way.
Kristy and Trevor carefully placed a blanket over the fox to calm his nerves before gently grabbing him and lifting him into a carrier. They moved the fox to a safe pathway nearby, then opened the carrier door, allowing him an easy exit.
“The youngster ran out of the cage, paused inquisitively to look back at the rescuers and then calmly trotted away,” East Sussex WRAS wrote in a post.
As they headed back toward their vehicle, Kristy and Trevor noticed another fox appear in the street. The two foxes acknowledged each other, then, side by side, they disappeared into the wilderness.
“It was such a heartwarming moment,” Kristy said in the post. “After seeing how frightened and distressed the cub had been, watching the two foxes greet each other and trot off down the road together was just lovely. It was the perfect ending to the rescue.”
