After suffering a serious brain injury at 20 years old, Serena Stadler welcomed a new puppy into her life named Madi. The accident left Stadler feeling depressed, but Madi quickly became the medicine she
needed to recover physically and mentally.
Madi, a white, spunky Chihuahua, instantly brought light back into Stadler’s life, and the two formed a swift, unbreakable bond.
“Madi became my biggest source of comfort,” Stadler told The Dodo. “She gave me a reason to get out of bed on the hardest days, and I honestly don't know how I would've gotten through that season of my life without her.”
With Madi by her side, Stadler began to turn a corner. She eventually recovered from her injury and graduated from college, fueled by Madi’s love. The two were inseparable, and even on Stadler’s most special day, Madi wasn’t too far away.
“She was my soul dog, and we just understood each other,” Stadler said. “I even made her my bridesmaid at my wedding.”
As the years passed, Stadler and Madi celebrated every milestone together. So when Madi’s 15th birthday was around the corner, Stadler couldn’t help but throw the sweet pup a traditional coming-of-age party.
“Turning 15 is such an incredible milestone for a Chihuahua, and I wanted to celebrate her in a way that felt as special as she was,” Stadler said. “It was also such a fun opportunity to bring my community together to celebrate a dog that had brought so much joy to so many people.”
Stadler invited an entire community of human and canine friends, then began party planning. Everything came together smoothly, and on the day of the event, she even got a special surprise from someone far away.
“One person even flew all the way from New York just to meet her, which still blows my mind,” Stadler said. “It was such a special reminder of how many lives she had touched.”
Madi’s pink-themed quinceañera, held at a local park, was as traditional as any other. The birthday pup was the best dressed, sporting an extravagant ruffled dress with a large bow on the back. Guests arrived on a red carpet entrance, and dispersed around framed pictures of Madi was an array of pink baked goods.
Guests poured in to celebrate Madi, singing "Happy Birthday" to her and cheering her on as she played with the other four-legged attendees. And instead of giving Madi presents for her big day, people brought generous donations for her local animal shelter.
“Instead of creating a wishlist for Madi, I made one for our local animal shelter with supplies they needed most. I was absolutely blown away by the response,” Stadler said. “Packages just kept showing up … It was such a special way to celebrate Madi while also giving back …”
The quinceañera was more magical than Stadler had imagined. And Madi couldn’t have been happier with the outpouring of love she received on her birthday.
“Madi was pretty calm, and I think she could tell how loved she was,” Stadler said. “She got so much attention from people who absolutely adored her.”
At the time of her quinceañera, Madi was battling a series of health issues that sadly worsened in the months after her party. Before she could make it to her next birthday, Madi passed away surrounded by the people she loved the most, leaving everyone brokenhearted.
“I knew she was getting older … so I wanted to celebrate her while she was still here with us,” Stadler said. “I had no idea it would end up being the last big celebration of her life, and I'm so grateful we did it.”

It’s been a year since Madi’s quinceañera, but footage of the sweet girl enjoying her birthday party is still going viral today. Online, the sweet pup carries a legacy of being one of the internet’s most adorable quinceañeras. But in Stadler’s life, Madi will always be remembered as being her very best friend.
“Madi was and always will be my soul dog,” Stadler said. “The relationship we had was so special, and it's something I'll cherish for the rest of my life.”
