This year, a family of bunnies has taken up residence in Michelle Owens’ backyard in Kansas. They mostly emerge from their hiding spot in the early mornings and late evenings — much to the delight of Owens' dog, Carley Mae.
“She is very sweet,” Owens told
The Dodo. "She watches [the bunnies] from the window and sometimes likes to chase them if she gets a chance.”
Carley Mae has never managed to get close to a bunny, however. That is, until recently.
Recently, Owens was out of town, and a friend was over, keeping an eye on things. After she let Carley Mae out into the yard, she realized the pup was drawn to something in the pool.
It was a little bunny who’d somehow fallen in and couldn’t get out.
As Owens’ friend scrambled to find her pool scoop, Carley Mae leaped into action — tracking the bunny along the pool’s edge before gently lifting him to safety on her own:
Thanks to Carley Mae, the bunny had been rescued, running off moments after being pulled from the pool.
When the little animal she loves to watch and chase needed her most, the pup was there to save the day.
Owens has since returned home and reviewed the footage from her camera, where she discovered just how Carley Mae's lifesaving actions that day had played out. The little bunny, too, is still alive in her yard after that scary ordeal.
Carley Mae, meanwhile, was given the hero’s treatment she deserves.
“She got an extra treat, praise and a good belly rub,” Owens said.
