An animal control officer in Dallas, Texas, noticed an alert on his phone from his security camera and opened up the app to see what was going on. He looked at the feed — and saw a plastic bin in his driveway filled with puppies.
Without hesitating, the
officer immediately rushed home to get the babies inside. It was over 100 degrees that day with a heat advisory in effect, and the puppies were already panting and struggling when the officer got to them. The puppies were only 2 to 3 weeks old, dehydrated, hungry and covered in fleas.
The security camera showed a woman pulling into the driveway, abandoning the bin of puppies and driving away. It's unclear if she knew the house belonged to an animal control officer or why she chose to leave the puppies in that driveway. All that mattered in that moment was making sure the puppies were OK.
The officer contacted the local authorities, who came out to investigate. Everyone was invested in figuring out what happened and making sure it never happened again.
After taking stock of the situation, the local animal control reached out to Dallas Dog Rescue Rehab Reform (Dallas DogRRR), who provided emergency medical care and foster placement for the puppies. After a little investigating, they were also able to locate the puppies’ mom and reunite her with her babies.
“They are doing great,” Patti Dawson, president of Dallas DogRRR, told The Dodo. “They are growing, thriving in foster care and becoming playful, healthy puppies. Mom is also safe and receiving the care she deserves.”
The animal control officer did not expect to see a bin full of puppies when he checked his camera that day, but thanks to his quick thinking, the entire family is safe and will be able to find their forever homes very soon.
