When Lisa Magick realized her cat, Fry, was missing, she immediately feared the worst.
The morning had started as usual, with Fry begging to go outside. The 16-year-old diabetic cat had recently developed a sense of wanderlust, and Magick had grown accustomed
to letting him out each morning and welcoming him home a few hours later. So that day, she didn’t think much of it as she watched him saunter out the door. Fry wasn’t wearing his collar, but he was microchipped, and Magick assumed he wouldn’t go far.
It turns out, she was wrong.
“He did not come back,” Magick said in a video for The Dodo.
The frantic pet parent jumped into action. Her heart sank as she grappled with the possibility that Fry could be gone.
“I was just out on the street, shaking treats for days and nights, knocking on everyone’s door,” Magick said.
But Fry wasn’t gone. In fact, he was on the adventure of a lifetime.
“I got a ping on one of my lost-and-found posts of him,” Magick said. “He went three houses away to this bachelorette party … and one of the women fell deeply in love with him.”
An attendee of the bachelorette party misconstrued Fry’s diabetic symptoms as malnourishment. She assumed Fry was being mistreated and decided he had to be rescued, so she flew him back to California with her.
Later, at a vet appointment, the woman discovered Fry’s microchip. She put the pieces together and contacted Magick.
“I was just so thrilled that he was alive,” Magick said.
The woman brought Fry back to Magick, who welcomed them both with open arms.
“We got to meet and hug and cry,” Magick said.
These days, Fry has a tracker-equipped collar, and Magick is watching him much more closely.
“This whole experience has made me appreciate him more and really resparked our love, honestly,” Magick said.
