Last August, animal rescuers from Amparo Pet Uberlândia, in Brazil, were alerted to a tragic scene at a landfill outside of town. A small dog had been abandoned there, and her time was running out.
“She was in an extremely frail state — her body covered
in wounds — and she was being pecked at by vultures,” a spokesperson for Amparo Pet told The Dodo. “It was a scene of suffering that no animal should ever have to endure.”
The little dog seemed to have no hope left. But help arrived in time.
Rescuers suspect that the dog, later named Jasmin, had been used for breeding at an illegal kennel, “only to be discarded like trash once she was no longer ‘useful.’”
Jasmin had no idea this was the moment her life would begin to change for the better.
In the days and weeks that followed, rescuers from Amparo Pet cleaned Jasmin up and got her the veterinary help she needed. The poor pup was found to be suffering from several health issues that required intensive care and monitoring.
“We fought for her recovery, providing medical care, protection, nourishment and — above all — a chance to start over,” Amparo Pet said. “There were many days filled with hard work, worry and hope. But we never gave up on her! And, little by little, this poor, long-suffering little dog began to recover.”
Jasmin became unrecognizable from her former self.
As the little dog’s health improved over the course of months, her rescuers knew she was ready for the next step on her journey to a happier life.
“We wanted more than just to save her from death; we wanted to find her a family that would offer her the love and dignity she should never have lost in the first place,” Amparo Pet said.
They found Jasmin the perfect home with adopter Helen Mundim and her family:
“Today marks one month since she became part of our family!” Mundim told The Dodo. “She is such a delightful little dog! She has adapted very well, thank God! She is incredibly sweet, though still a bit timid. Everything happens in her own time. Now, she finally has the life she has always deserved!”
After such a difficult beginning, Jasmin’s future has never looked brighter
“Today, when we see Jasmin happy, we know that every difficulty, every effort, and every battle was worth it,” Amparo Pet said. “She was abandoned as if she had no value. We showed that her life was worth everything!”
