A few days ago, a mobile dog groomer stopped at a California 7-Eleven and noticed a tiny animal peeking out from the shrubbery lining the parking lot.
The terrified soul was Benito — a Chihuahua who’d been
abandoned with all his belongings: a crate, a food bowl and a water bowl.
When the groomer approached Benito, the anxious pup ran inside his crate. The woman took the opportunity to latch the crate shut, then she called a local shelter for help.
Unfortunately, the shelter the woman called is an indoor-only facility, with little ventilation and a high euthanasia rate. When Benito’s story reached team members at Let’s Rescue Dogs, the worried animal advocates quickly sent volunteer Cynthia Lopez to grab the pup before shelter personnel arrived.
Soon, Benito was safe with Let’s Rescue Dogs founder Elena Rodriguez. The rescuer felt heartbroken for Benito, who was clearly scarred from his time spent alone.
“His eyes were huge,” Rodriguez told The Dodo. “You could see how confused and terrified he was.”
Rodriguez made a comfortable area in her bathroom where Benito could decompress. She offered him small pieces of food, trying to earn his trust. Eventually, she gave Benito a toy. That’s when everything changed.
“He was so excited to have it, and we started to play a little game of tug-of-war together,” Rodriguez said. “That one positive interaction made him feel completely comfortable with me, and I was finally able to give him that much-needed bath!”
Clean and newly confident, Benito trotted out to Rodriguez’s yard to meet the other rescue pups in her care. He zoomed around the grass with his new friends, clearly elated to be somewhere safe.
Today, Benito is in a foster home, searching for his forever family. Rodriguez is so glad that Benito ended up in the right place, and she’s hopeful he’ll find his people soon.
“He has a real joy for life and has so much love inside that tiny, little body,” she said. “Seeing him realize he was safe and watching him go from that terrified little pup to an energetic, happy bouncing boy is what it’s all about.”
