It’s hard to shock the staff at Montgomery County Animal Shelter (MCAS), especially after years of rescuing animals in eastern Texas. But when a neglected husky named Shiloh walked through their doors last May, their jaws dropped.
At the time, Shiloh had
just been “seized from an unsafe situation,” and his poor body showed signs of extreme neglect. His limbs were completely hairless, with pink, inflamed skin covering his legs, tail and face. The rest of his fur, which blanketed his back and the top of his head, was knotted and dirty. And his icy blue eyes were begging for help.
The team could tell just by looking at Shiloh that he’d been seriously neglected. But it wasn’t until they did a thorough checkup that they realized just how dire the situation was.
“He was severely malnourished, had overgrown nails and ear infections, and was missing most of his fur,” MCAS wrote on Facebook. “The fur he had left was severely matted.”
Shiloh, who was estimated to be around 9 years old, hardly looked like a dog when he arrived at MCAS. But the shelter staff promised to do everything they could to help him feel like a playful, youthful puppy again.
First, they gave him a much-needed bath, taking extra care of his sensitive, exposed skin. Then, they started him on a feeding plan that would allow him to regain weight at a safe pace. And they found a quiet kennel for him to rest until a foster came along.
After two weeks in the shelter, Stacey Pougatcheva volunteered to foster Shiloh and took him home to continue his care. And even though he still needed regular grooming for his fur and skin, the sweet boy never complained.
“I truly think he knows we’re trying to help him,” Pougatcheva wrote on Facebook. “He’ll rest his head in my lap or lean in for cuddles, and it melts my heart every time.”
This became especially evident during bathtime, when Pougatcheva would try to comfort a trembling Shiloh.
“Baths are definitely not his favorite — he shakes like a little leaf — but even then, he’ll lean into me as if to say, ‘I don’t love this, but I trust you,’” Pougatcheva wrote. “It’s incredibly sweet.”
Shiloh’s progress seemed slow at first. But after a few weeks, he began gaining weight, and peach fuzz started to cover his once-bare legs. It was exactly what his foster family had been hoping for.
Of course, his recovery didn’t come without a few setbacks. As a senior dog, Shiloh became prone to ear infections and developed a bit of a cough. He also slept a lot, which Pougatcheva learned was a result of his partial deafness.
It was hard to tell what Shiloh’s life was like before being rescued. But as Pougatcheva spent more time with him, she started to see clues about what the pup had gone through.
“He clearly was used to living outside because when he would be in my yard, he would make a little nest and fall asleep in the bushes,” Pougatcheva told The Dodo. “But now he knows he lives inside, and he comes straight to the door instead of hiding away.”
Three months after his rescue, Shiloh is now looking better than ever. All of his fur has grown back, he’s reached a healthy weight again, and he’s even shown interest in toys. The sweet boy has completely transformed, and Pougatcheva can’t wait to see him thrive even more once he lands a forever home.
“He looks like a brand-new dog,” Pougatcheva said. “I think he's enjoying life.”

While Shiloh still has some health issues here and there, he is overall doing well. You wouldn’t be able to tell how far he’s come by looking at him — he looks like any other husky now. But his caregivers know just how much he’s transformed, and they couldn’t be more in awe of his resilience.
Shiloh’s still waiting for his perfect forever family — one who will happily support his continued medical care and easygoing lifestyle. But even at this stage of the rescue, Shiloh’s rescuers see his case as a glowing success.
“Shiloh has come a long way, and while some of the physical effects of his past will always remain, he is clearly feeling much better,” MCAS wrote. “Now he just needs a home where he can spend his senior years being safe, spoiled and loved.”
