For six years, Kenai worked as a police dog for the North Yorkshire Police in the UK, helping his handlers track down dangerous weapons and find vulnerable missing persons. When he finally retired, he was
adopted by a wonderful couple, who were excited to pamper him for the rest of his life.
“As soon as we met him, we fell in love,” Ashley, Kenai’s dad, said in a press release. “From day one, it’s like he’s always been with us. He’s such a good dog; he’s like a big puppy. He’s really soppy and soft; you’d never believe that he’d been a police dog.”
The couple has vowed to give Kenai the best retirement possible and take him on adventures every weekend. He’s learning how to just be a dog — but his incredible instincts are definitely still there.
Kenai was out for a walk with his parents in the countryside when he stopped suddenly. He darted over to some farming equipment and refused to budge. His parents wandered over to find out what was going on ... and found a blind lamb trapped under some metal bars.
Shocked, the couple immediately freed the lamb and carried him to a nearby house. The neighbors were able to contact the lamb’s owner and get him back to his flock safe and sound.
“I don’t think anyone would have found him if Kenai hadn’t indicated to us; he’s still got it, and is still great at tracking,” Ashley said.
Even though Kenai was off duty, he knew the baby lamb needed help, and no matter where he is or what he’s doing, he’ll never overlook an opportunity to help someone. That’s just who he is.
Only a day after Kenai saved the lamb, he ended up needing help himself after he injured himself playing fetch. Luckily, Thin Blue Paw Foundation stepped in, which has pledged to be there for Kenai after he dedicated his life to helping others.
