Late last month, on a summer day in Seaford, New York, a clothing boutique owner found someone unexpected hiding beneath the shop’s desk — a terrified wild animal who needed help.
The shop’s front door had been open all day for deliveries, allowing warm
air to flow through. The animal, an opossum, had likely slipped in when no one was looking and walked straight to his hiding place in a dark corner of the wooden desk.
In need of expert help, the owner called local animal rescuer Karenlynn Stracher, who quickly headed over.
Stracher used a net to guide the opossum out from under the desk, into a carrier.
“He ended up grabbing some wires, and in doing that, he knocked all the gift cards that were on the counter right into my net,” Stracher told The Dodo. “It was very funny, as if he was determined to get something for his trouble.”
You can watch the rescue unfold in a video here:
Stracher assessed the opossum for injuries and found him to be in good health. He was ready to return home to the wild. She took him to a nature preserve nearby and released him back into the grass.
With any luck, this opossum will be staying outdoors from now on, where he belongs.
