A few weeks ago, Meile Veronika was working on a craft project at home when someone she’d never seen before suddenly appeared at her front door. To her surprise, a lone dog with sad eyes approached the house and stared in at Meile.
Meile was shocked —
not only because her front gate was closed, making it nearly impossible for anyone to get in, but she'd also been silently wishing for someone to talk to that day.
“I was just very lonely,” Meile told The Dodo. “[I]n that moment, I really needed someone. I really needed some person to talk to.”
The dog appeared at her door without warning and seemingly on cue. And with her big, round eyes and quiet demeanor, Meile immediately got that sense that the pup was feeling down, too.
Meile was unfamiliar with the dog, and she had no idea where the poor girl had come from.
“I really thought she was lost,” Meile said. “So I was, like, petting her and telling her that I'm so sorry. ‘I don't know why you're so sad. I don't know what happened. You're okay. I love you.’”
Meile showered her new friend with affection as they both lay outside on the sunny pavement. The dog’s calm presence was just what she needed that day.
“It really was special for me,” Meile said. “I was completely taken aback … I just felt like I was so supported and protected.”
You can watch that sweet moment here:
The dog sported a collar with no tags, so Meile had no way of finding her owner. But about 40 minutes later, when Meile stepped back inside, she suddenly saw a man approach her fence — and the dog’s reaction shocked her.
“[H]e sort of called her, and she ran to him, wagging her tail,” Meile said. “Immediately, she was so happy … so I thought, ‘Wow, she must know this guy. That must be her owner.’”
When Meile stepped out to meet the guy, she learned that he wasn’t the pup’s owner at all. He was actually her neighbor, who’d recognized her through the fence. When he described where the pup lived, Meile realized that she wasn’t such a stranger after all.
“I actually was driving down the road one day, and I saw a dog in the middle of the road just standing there, like unbothered,” Meile said. “[T]hat was the same dog.”
Thankfully, the dog wasn’t a sad stray after all, but instead a low-energy neighbor who happened to make her way inside Meile’s gate. It was the best-case scenario for everyone involved.
And while Meile watched the pup walk back home that evening, she couldn’t help but feel like that pup’s visit was divine intervention on what started as such a sad day for her.
“[T]o this day, I don't have any idea how she came in,” Meile said. “She really was meant to come here.”
