When Cora was pulled from a slaughterhouse and rescued from the meat trade in China, she was in rough shape. She was taken to Harbin SHS Animal Rescue, where she was finally safe and able to relax. Eventually, she made her way to the UK and was taken in by
8 Below Husky Rescue.
Cora is 7-years-old and has been through so much — but it wasn’t until she reached 8 Below Husky Rescue that her life truly began.
Cora is missing one full ear and part of the other, as well as part of one of her front legs. Her rescuers are trying to help her learn to navigate the world in a way that works best for her. Cora, on the other hand, barely seems to notice she’s different at all.
“Cora genuinely doesn’t seem to be aware that she has a disability,” Jade Hayley Brightmore of 8 Below Husky Rescue told The Dodo. “She doesn’t look at herself as being different or limited. She wants to get out for her walks, explore, enjoy life, be loved and, most importantly, have her belly rubbed!”
Despite her past, Cora is so full of love and seeks affection constantly. Humans did her wrong, but she’s not holding any grudges. She’s living in the now, and she’s a beautiful example of just how resilient dogs can be.
Right now, Cora’s rescuers are focused on helping her build up her strength and giving her body the time it needs to develop the muscles to help her get around on three legs. They’re going at Cora’s pace while also trying to not let her get too ahead of herself.
“We obviously have to be aware of her physical limitations for her and make sure we don’t allow her enthusiasm to exceed what her body can currently manage, but Cora herself certainly doesn’t seem to think there is anything she can’t do,” Brightmore said.
Everyone at the rescue is so thrilled they’re able to give Cora this second chance, and the pup is making the most of it in every way.
“Humans see what she’s lost and think about everything she must have endured,” Brightmore said. “Cora seems far more interested in what life has to offer her next.”
