Meet Shakey: a sweet, disabled puppy who refuses to let his circumstances get him down.
This past June, the Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA) animal law enforcement team found 4-month-old Shakey and dozens of other animals living in “unsafe, unsanitary conditions”
on a rundown property. Officers took Shakey to the PSPCA headquarters, where experts provided diagnostic testing.
As they examined Shakey, veterinarians realized the little pup couldn’t control his movements and frequently convulsed.
“When he tried to walk, he would stumble and fall,” PSPCA wrote in a Facebook post.
A month later, Shakey is still at the facility, and he’s still wobbling. But despite everything, Shakey maintains a positive spirit.
“Shakey is still shakey,” PSPCA wrote. “He still trembles. He still needs assistance. He has challenges ahead. But he’s also playful. He’s curious. He’s happy.”
Rescuers can tell that Shakey just wants to be a normal dog.
“He doesn’t know that he’s different,” PSPCA wrote. “He doesn’t know he has needs that others don’t. He just knows that he wants to play, explore, and be loved.”
PSPCA team members are hopeful that Shakey will find a “super special home” with a family who understands his needs. According to PSPCA staff, Shakey must be kept in a small space to prevent injuries, and he requires hand feeding. The pup can’t roam unsupervised; he’s not currently house-trained and will likely require ongoing veterinary appointments, including neurological care.
Rescuers know that Shakey is worthy of a loving home, and he could make the right person so happy. Hopefully, that person will find him soon.
“He is not a normal puppy. He never will be,” PSCPA wrote. “But that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve a chance.”
