It came as a sign — in the form of a sign.
Recently, travelers Nicholas Martens and a few friends were exploring the old town of Budva, Montenegro, when they noticed something curious. Down one of the narrow streets, they saw a placard that read, “Follow
the cat.”
And, sure enough, sitting nearby was an actual cat.
“We decided to follow the cat as a joke,” Martens told The Dodo. The cat led them around the corner to a cafe, then appeared to pick out an open table for them. “We were so amazed by this,” Martens said.
The establishment was Blue Cat Art & Cafe, whose owner rescues stray cats and gives them a safe place to live. Eight cats live there in all, including Bıdık, who had escorted Marten and his friends to their table.
“We love animals so much,” Sarp, a worker at the cafe, told The Dodo. “People like to take photos of Bıdık and the other cats. And to pet them.”
Sarp says that Bıdık wasn’t trained to be a furry maître d’, despite her willingness to fill that role.
“She and other cats sometimes welcome people, but not each time like [in Martens’ video]. That was a lovely coincidence,” Sarp said.
Martens and his friends are glad they followed the sign’s instructions — following Bıdık’s lead to a memorable evening, surrounded by cats.
“We had an amazing cocktail on the terrace of this cat cafe,” he said.
