Meet Oreo: a resilient stray pup who recently got his happy ending.
For years, Oreo lived on the streets of Del Valle, Texas, relying on scraps from neighbors to stay alive. When the hungry pup couldn’t find food, he’d resort to digging through the trash,
rooting around for any bit of sustenance.
A few months ago, Oreo was sniffing inside a discarded plastic jug of cheese balls when he accidentally got his head stuck inside. The confused pup tried to free himself, to no avail. He stumbled blindly through the wilderness, perhaps looking for someone to save his life.
When a goodhearted stranger spotted Oreo in the woods, they contacted Jack Jack’s Pack, a nonprofit dog rescue, and told them the news. Rescuers raced to the area and interviewed neighbors, who told them that Oreo had been stuck in the jar for well over a week. The poor pup was "suffocating," unable to eat or drink.
“He was fading, and every second mattered,” Jack Jack’s Pack wrote in a Facebook post. “One wrong move could cost him his life. Time was against us, but we weren’t giving up no matter what.”
In need of a better view, rescuers enlisted the help of military drone operator Greg Whiting, as well as Cameron Woldhagen and Justin Cox of Backcountry Drones. Meanwhile, tons of volunteers, including team members from Lost Paws Rescue of Texas, supported the mission on the ground.
Eventually, rescuers managed to locate Oreo in the woods. An animal control officer used a dart to sedate the nervous pup, allowing rescue team members to remove the jar and take Oreo to safety.
Jack Jack’s Pack placed Oreo with Meredith, an experienced foster mom. So far, Oreo is doing great, taking his new life in stride.
“Oreo is slowly, steadily learning that the world can be a gentler place,” Jack Jack’s Pack wrote in a Facebook post. “He’s adjusting to indoor life after years outside, and it’s a big transition for a dog with that kind of history — but he’s doing it with a lot of heart.”
Free from the jar that almost cost him his life, Oreo can finally rest and enjoy the comforts of love.
“Oreo’s best days are ahead,” Jack Jack’s Pack wrote. “We’re sure of it.”
