When drivers traveling down Sunrise Highway on Long Island, New York, recently noticed a tiny ball of fluff sleeping on a median in the center of the road, they knew exactly who to call. Merely 30 minutes later, local animal rescuer John Debacker was
there and ready to help.
When Debacker saw the kitten surrounded by rushing cars, his heart sank.
“It was a terrifying scene,” the rescuer wrote in a Facebook post.
With help from members of the Suffolk Police Department, Debacker halted traffic and dashed for the cat.
“I was very scared of the kitten darting away,” Debacker told The Dodo. “Luckily I snuck up behind her, and it went smoothly.”

Debacker examined the cat and found she’d suffered a bit of road rash, but otherwise, she was just fine.
The rescuer took the 8-week-old kitten home, where she could decompress, eat and hydrate.
“[She was] very feisty at first,” Debacker said. “But she calmed down a lot.”
Debacker coordinated with his friends at Last Hope Rescue, and a few days later, the kitten was safe in their care.
The kitten will remain with the rescue until team members find her the perfect forever home. Until then, she’s loved and cared for, looking forward to better days ahead.
