When Ofir Aloush and her boyfriend woke up in Koh Tao, Thailand, the other morning, they weren’t quite sure what to do for the day. The weather wasn’t right for a beach trip, and after weeks of traveling, the couple just wanted to rest. So, they decided
to get massages at a local spa.
Ofir and her partner wandered around for a bit until they found a small massage parlor in one of the island’s busiest areas. They’d never been there before, but they knew it was exactly what they needed when the bustling sounds from outside hushed as they entered.
Then they looked across the lounge and saw something unexpected.
“The waiting area was almost empty, except for one older man who had a cat sitting on him,” Ofir told The Dodo. “We actually assumed the cat belonged to him.”
As the couple sat down in comfy recliner chairs, they jokingly said to each other, “How funny would it be if the cat started going from person to person?” But their joke soon turned into reality when, seconds later, the cat sauntered over to Ofir.
“She jumped off the man’s lap, completely skipped my boyfriend, and came straight over to me,” Ofir said.
Before Ofir could say anything, the cat leaped onto her lap and started making biscuits on her thighs, mimicking the massage she was receiving from the spa employee.
Ofir was stunned. As a dog-lover, she’d never been that close to an unfamiliar cat before and was a little nervous at first. But the reaction from the spa’s employees instantly eased her worries.
“I’d never had such a close interaction with a cat I didn’t know before,” Ofir said. “But the women working at the massage shop were so excited and made me feel completely comfortable.”
That’s when Ofir realized that the cat didn’t belong to the man in the waiting area, but instead to the kind women who worked there.
“Unfortunately, I don’t know the cat’s name,” Ofir said. “[But] I do know that she’s a female and that she actually belongs to the massage shop. The staff absolutely adore her, and it was obvious she’s a very loved part of the place.”
The cat’s antics made everyone in the spa smile, especially Ofir, who’d been missing her pup back home while traveling.
“I have a beautiful black French bulldog back home, and during such a long trip, I missed her so much,” Ofir said. “So the affection and cuddles I got from this sweet cat were actually really comforting and made me feel a little closer to home.”

As relaxing as the massage was, meeting the spa’s cat became a highlight of the trip for Ofir and her boyfriend. They eventually said goodbye to the cat and returned home to their beloved dog, but they haven’t stopped thinking of her since.
What began as a self-care day for a tired, traveling couple soon turned into a heartwarming meeting across species. And as Ofir sees it, there’s nowhere else she would’ve rather been in that moment.
“In the end, I thought it was incredibly sweet that, out of everyone there, she chose me,” Ofir said. “I’ll never forget that experience.”
