Foreign tourists on holiday in Bali can expect to come across plants and animals they have likely never seen before. But for JC Chanowsky and his wife, Angela, their most memorable exotic wildlife encounter actually involved something much closer to home.
While hanging out in their room at a resort, Chanowsky and Angela noticed what appeared to be a strange, hairy insect moving slowly across the floor.
“I honestly thought it was a spider in the room,” Chanowsky told The Dodo. “We had just gotten out of bed and were like, 'We paid all this money for this fancy resort in a jungle and got spiders.'”
Then he took a closer look:
Turns out, what the Chanowskys thought was a spider was, in fact, one of Angela’s false eyelashes. A team of local ants had apparently decided the eyelash was worth carrying back to their nest.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Chanowsky said.
It’s unclear exactly why the ants were attracted to the false eyelashes — but seeing their hard work in hauling it home, the couple decided not to impede them or try to reclaim it.
“We let them bring it back to their queen as a trophy,” Chanowsky said.
