On the campus of Mexico’s Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí (UASLP), students are taught more than the skills they’ll need for future success. They’re also learning what it means to be kind to animals.
“The university allows stray dogs and cats to
be on the premises,” Esaú Garcia, a law student at UASLP, told The Dodo. “The students take care of them, feed them, and when they suffer any situation that affects their health, we work together to take them to the vet.”
Recently, however, the students got something in return.
Last month, a graduation ceremony was held for students of the Faculty of Professional Studies. A few speeches from school officials were given before the cap-and-gown-clad grads-to-be — but then something happened that no one expected.
One of the beloved campus dogs wandered onto the stage to deliver a commencement speech of his own.
“His words were truly moving,” Garcia said. “It was an epic moment.”
After the dog finished his rousing oration of friendly barks toward the assembled audience, he received a hearty ovation. He then rejoined the crowd, allowing the ceremony to continue as planned.
The pup’s speech was the shortest of the day — but it resonated nonetheless.
“It brought a big smile to all our faces,” Garcia said. “I think it completely brightened everyone’s day.”
