Last month, while refurbishing a vintage truck that had gone untouched for years, a man in England popped open the rusted hood to reveal a shocking scene.
“First, a black cat shot out past him in panic,”
Celia Hammond Animal Trust (CHAT) wrote on Instagram. “Then, tucked deep inside the engine bay beneath tarpaulin and leaves, were four tiny fluffy kittens huddled together.”
The man was expecting to find an old engine when he lifted the truck’s hood, but instead, he was met with a pile of tiny babies, whose mother had just run away in fear. And while an unused truck parked in someone’s yard may have seemed like the ideal place to have her kittens, they were actually in danger.
“[I]t was actually an extremely busy environment, with cars and [trucks] moving around constantly, making it a very dangerous place to raise her babies,” CHAT wrote.
Worried, the man called CHAT for help, and rescuers soon arrived with a plan to save the frightened mama cat and her babies. First, rescuers Carolyn and Sarah laid out various treats to lure the cat back to her kittens — they didn’t want to move the babies without grabbing their mom, too.
But the elusive black cat evaded their bait for days, only returning to eat after everyone had gone.
On the fourth day, there were no signs of the mama cat, and the rescuers worried something might have happened to her. So, Carolyn shuttled the vulnerable babies to CHAT’s Greenacres sanctuary for immediate care, while Sarah stayed behind to keep looking. Thankfully, Sarah captured the mama cat later that evening and reunited the tiny family shortly after.
“The moment she saw her babies, she immediately relaxed and began washing and feeding them,” CHAT wrote. “It was incredibly special to witness.”
The mama cat, whom CHAT named Shadow, remained hypervigilant in her first few days at the shelter. She spent most of her time crouched in her kennel, her ears flat and her eyes wide, caring for her babies while watching her rescuers’ every move.
Until, finally, she began trusting the CHAT volunteers enough to start eating from their hands.
“For a frightened mum cat, that’s a huge bit of progress,” CHAT wrote on Instagram. “She’s still learning that she’s safe, but little moments like this are exactly how trust begins.”

Shadow and her babies, named Mini, Beetle, Morris and Brum, are still adjusting to their new surroundings at CHAT’s headquarters, but they’re getting more comfortable each day. Soon, they’ll be ready for adoption. And while the folks at CHAT will miss having the adorable family around, seeing them off to forever homes will make an already triumphant rescue even more rewarding.
“Moments like this make every long day, worry, and sleepless night worthwhile,” CHAT wrote.
