Last month, a veterinarian at Main Line Animal Rescue (MLAR) in Chester County, Pennsylvania, walked into the rescue’s barn and found two plastic totes stacked on top of each other, baking in the 80-degree
heat.
The vet’s heart dropped as she looked inside. There, terrified and “panting heavily,” was an entire family of fluffy cats — a mama and her three babies.
“She immediately grabbed the containers and rushed the little family into our shelter hospital,” the rescue wrote in a Facebook post.
Rescuers assumed the mama cat, later named Marie, might be anxious, but she hopped out of the tote and was excited to meet her new friends.
“[She] immediately rubbed against us for attention,” the rescue wrote. “After everything she had just endured, she still wanted to be loved.”
Team members lined a kennel with ice packs and put the cats inside to cool down.
Once fully recovered, they transferred the family to a safe foster home, where they could continue their care.
Today, all three kittens have been adopted into loving homes.
Mama Marie is still waiting to find her perfect fit. Rescuers say she’s an “absolute sweetheart” who would likely prefer to be the only cat in her family.
Rescuers hope this story encourages community members to ask experts for help when they need to rehome an animal, rather than abandoning them in an unsafe situation.
“If you ever need help with an animal — whether it's your own pet or a stray you've found — please reach out to us or any shelter or rescue in your area,” the rescue wrote. “And if you need to surrender an animal urgently, please come speak with someone.”
Thankfully, in this case, the cats ended up in good hands, and their future looks much brighter than before.
