When a dog showed up on a couple’s property in rural South Carolina, she was desperately looking for a place to call home. She moved herself into a fallen tree in the woods behind the couple’s camper. She did her best to make the space clean, safe and
dry — and then she gave birth to eight little puppies.
The couple made sure the dog, later named Georgia, had plenty of food and water so she would have the strength to properly care for her puppies. They reached out to Labor of Love Transport Rescue for help, and everyone there was so impressed with what an incredible mom Georgia was.
“Despite the sweltering heat and the frequent heavy thunderstorms, the babies were cool and dry as a bone,” Holly Jones, director of Labor of Love Transport Rescue, told The Dodo.
Georgia was immediately comfortable with her rescuers, and they suspected that at one point in time, she’d had a loving home. She took food from their hands and allowed them to slip a leash around her, then watched as her puppies were pulled from the den, one by one.
All nine members of the little family were checked out by a vet, and everyone continued to marvel at how well Georgia had protected her puppies. All eight of them were in excellent health. Georgia has heartworm, but she’s expected to make a full recovery.
Georgia and her puppies are now settled in at the rescue, but just because her puppies are now completely safe doesn’t mean she’s stopped taking care of them. She shows up as the best mom she can be every single day, putting her puppies first always.
“Georgia has proven to be a complete rockstar,” Jones said.
Once the puppies are weaned and ready, the entire family will be put up for adoption, including Georgia. They all deserve to find loving homes, and Georgia deserves a life where she gets to be the one being cared for.
