Recently, a dog named Coconut was found wandering the streets of Fayette County, West Virginia. Fayette County Animal Shelter took in the tiny, white Chihuahua and gave her the care she desperately needed.
Danielle, a dog lover and West Virginia resident, decided to foster Coconut. After everything the little pup had been through, she was extremely timid and terrified of everything.
“She was just so scared,” Danielle, who preferred to have her last name omitted, told The Dodo.
Over the next few days, Danielle and Coconut formed a strong bond. The little dog came out of her shell and revealed her sweet, loving personality.
Danielle was delighted when Coconut got adopted less than a week later. The shelter explained to Coconut’s adopters that she was sometimes
a bit nervous, and they seemed to understand.
“[I]t seemed like a really good match,” Danielle said.
But just days later, the shelter staff got a call from Coconut’s new family that made their hearts sink. They explained that Coconut had gotten out of her harness in a grocery store parking lot and ran into the surrounding woods — and they didn’t want to look for her.
“They attempted to call her, but they had groceries in the car, so they left,” Danielle said. “It was a really frustrating situation."
The shelter told Danielle what happened, and she immediately got in her car and drove an hour out to the grocery store where Coconut had escaped.
“I was like, ‘There’s no way we’re going to find her,’” Danielle said. “I really didn’t have any hope, but I couldn’t sit at home knowing that she was out there.”
Danielle called Coconut’s name and circled the area in her car, desperately trying to find the missing pup. After 45 minutes, Danielle finally saw Coconut, way off in the distance. Danielle called Coconut’s name one more time, and the dog came running right up to her.
“She … gave me a bunch of kisses, was jumping all over me, and then she ended up just jumping right in my car,” Danielle said.
Coconut slept in Danielle’s lap the whole car ride home. The entire time, Danielle couldn’t believe that she’d actually managed to rescue the adorable pup.
“I was so grateful,” Danielle said. “It seemed like a one-in-a-million chance to go and find her.”
Coconut is currently resting and recovering from her ordeal in Danielle’s home. Her previous owners officially surrendered her because they thought she was too “needy.” So Danielle is more than happy to keep Coconut with her for now, and is even heavily considering adopting Coconut herself. Either way, from now on, all Coconut will know is love.
