Kila and Susie arrived at RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch in July after being rescued from separate cases of neglect. The shelter knew Susie was pregnant when she arrived and were prepared to take care of her and her puppies. Then they
took Kila to the vet and made a shocking discovery: She was pregnant too.
“By the time we found out Kila was pregnant, we’d already taken Susie in, knowing that she was expecting,” Chloe Gee of the RSPCA said in a press release.
The shelter had been ready for one litter of puppies, but two was a tall order. There was no turning back though, and they made both moms comfortable as they waited for the arrival of the two litters of puppies.
Susie gave birth to an adorable litter of spaniel-type puppies, and the staff named them Ashara, Enam, Fyra, Iki, Otto, San and Una. Not long after, Kila gave birth to Cedric, Clark, Cornelius, Guinness, Jones, Lorenzo, Lucille, Marion, Roderick, Sarah and Winnie. The two moms had 18 puppies between them, and both did an amazing job of caring for them and helping them thrive.
“It was certainly a busy time at the center helping both the mums and all their pups — but we are so pleased with how they grew into loveable little characters,” Gee said.
All 18 puppies have since found their forever families — but both Susie and Kila are still waiting to find theirs. These moms deserve loving homes just as much as their puppies do, and the staff at the shelter are hoping they won’t have to wait much longer.
Kila is a gentle giant who adores attention and lounging on the couch with the people she loves. She enjoys treats, walks and meeting new people, and already knows a bunch of commands. She may be able to live with another dog and school-aged children.
Susie is incredibly friendly and wants to be around people the majority of the time. She loves walks, treats and being fussed over. She could live with another dog and children of all ages.
“Now we want to find homes for [the puppies’] mums who have been fantastic at bringing up their pups and now deserve their own family where they can enjoy living their best life,” Gee said.
It's often easier to adopt out puppies than older dogs, and Susie and Kila are currently experiencing that phenomenon. This month is Adoptober, and the RSPCA is continuing to highlight the dogs who have been overlooked in the hopes of finding them all loving homes.
“Rescuing a dog is such a rewarding experience, and they’re sure to bring such love and fun to your home," Gee said.
