This past August, a Central California Irrigation District (CCID) employee was walking along a canal near Los Banos Creek when they noticed a cardboard box sitting in the dirt.
Gathered near the box were a group of small puppies, all of them abandoned
and struggling to survive.
The worker contacted team members at Kate's Furreka Rescue (KFR), who quickly arrived on the scene. They were stunned to find a total of 11 puppies, many of whom were still stuck in the box.
“The puppies were hot, hungry and thirsty,” a KFR team member told The Dodo.
Team members secured the pups and took them to the rescue, where they received medical treatment and regular meals. Eventually, they moved into safe foster homes.
Foster parents named the pups River, Brooks, Dewdrop, Misty, Bay, Kai, Hudson, Wells, Banks, Nile and Hydro. Today, they’re all thriving.
“They are doing great and are having fun playing, socializing and learning that they are loved,” the representative said. “They are all so loving, and thanks to our awesome volunteers, you can hold them like babies.”
Soon, the pups will be spayed or neutered as they prepare for the next steps in the adoption process.
Now, watching the pups recover, rescuers can’t help but smile.
“Our hearts were so happy,” the representative said.
