What's Happening?
The Mojave Desert Land Trust is recruiting 'femme-aligned' students for its Women In Science Discovering Our Mojave (WISDOM) project. This initiative aims to document the Mojave Desert's night skies through photography and data collection. The internship, running from October 2025 to April 2026, offers participants the opportunity to engage in night sky photography, light measurement recording, and data analysis. Interns will also create a creative project to share their findings. The program is open to female students, particularly those underrepresented in conservation, and provides transportation, gear, and a stipend.
Why It's Important?
This project highlights the growing field of astrotourism and the importance of conservation efforts in preserving natural landscapes. By focusing on underrepresented groups, the initiative promotes diversity in science and conservation fields. The documentation of night skies contributes to environmental awareness and the understanding of light pollution's impact. The program also offers educational and professional development opportunities for participants, fostering future leaders in conservation and science.
What's Next?
Applications for the internship close on September 1, 2025. Interested candidates can apply through the Mojave Desert Land Trust's website. The project is expected to generate valuable data and insights into the Mojave Desert's night skies, potentially influencing future conservation strategies and policies. Participants will share their experiences and findings, contributing to broader discussions on environmental preservation and scientific exploration.
