The anthology was conceived during the pandemic in 2021, as the editors sought to create a sense of community and understanding for disabled children. The book includes diverse experiences, offering insights into the lives of children with various disabilities, and aims to serve as a resource for both disabled and non-disabled readers.
Why It's Important?
The release of 'Owning It' is a significant step towards increasing visibility and understanding of disabled experiences in children's literature. By providing stories written by disabled authors, the anthology challenges traditional narratives that often portray disabled characters through a non-disabled lens. This book has the potential to foster empathy and awareness among young readers, promoting inclusivity and acceptance. It also serves as a valuable tool for educators and parents to discuss disability with children, helping to break down stereotypes and encourage open conversations about diversity and inclusion.
