What's Happening?
Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts in Petoskey is organizing its inaugural Zucchini Bread Bake-Off on August 23. The event invites bakers of all ages and skill levels to participate, with entry fees supporting the Manna Food Project, a nonprofit focused on combating hunger in Northern Michigan. Participants can submit their homemade zucchini bread in one of three categories: Classic, Creative Twist, or Kids (for those aged 14 and younger). The entry drop-off is scheduled between 9-11 a.m. on the event day, with a $15 donation required at the time of submission. Judging will commence at noon, and winners will be announced at 3 p.m. both in-store and via Facebook Live. Each participant will receive a $25 gift certificate to Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts, while the top baker in each category will be awarded $250 in gift certificates.
Why It's Important?
The event not only promotes community engagement and culinary creativity but also supports a significant cause by aiding the Manna Food Project. This initiative highlights the role of local businesses in fostering community spirit and addressing social issues such as hunger. By participating, community members contribute to a charitable cause while enjoying a fun and competitive atmosphere. The bake-off also serves as a platform for local bakers to showcase their skills and gain recognition, potentially encouraging more community-driven events in the future.
What's Next?
Participants interested in joining the bake-off must sign up in-store at Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts. The event is expected to draw a diverse group of bakers, and the community is likely to respond positively, given the success of previous events like the Banana Bread Bake-Off. The outcome of the event could lead to more frequent community events hosted by local businesses, further strengthening community ties and support for local charities.
