What's Happening?
The HS Insider is calling for applications from high school students to join its Student Advisory Board (SAB) for the upcoming school year. The SAB is designed to bring together student journalists who are passionate about storytelling and leadership. Members will collaborate on multimedia projects such as photo series and podcasts, and develop tools and resources to enhance their reporting skills. The application deadline is set for Monday, September 8, with notifications sent by Thursday, September 11. Accepted students will participate in bi-weekly video meetings starting September 15, and engage in various journalistic projects throughout the term.
Why It's Important?
This initiative provides high school students with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in journalism, fostering skills in writing, reporting, and multimedia production. By participating in the SAB, students can connect with peers across Southern California and the nation, enhancing their understanding of diverse perspectives and issues. Additionally, members will have the chance to learn from professional journalists at the L.A. Times, potentially influencing their future career paths in media and communications. The program supports the development of young leaders who are curious and invested in learning new skills.
What's Next?
Following the application process, selected students will begin their roles on the SAB with the first meeting scheduled for September 15. They will engage in regular meetings and collaborative projects, contributing to HS Insider's content initiatives. The SAB will also play a role in planning events and participating in the Festival of Books, providing further opportunities for student involvement and leadership.
Beyond the Headlines
The SAB's focus on collaboration and creativity may lead to innovative approaches in student journalism, potentially influencing how young reporters engage with their communities. The program's emphasis on diversity and inclusion could also contribute to broader discussions on representation in media, encouraging students to explore and report on issues that matter to them and their peers.
